About
Augustus Tiberius, born in 1970 in South Africa, is a self-taught artist whose sculptural works delve into the theme of mass.
"Having spent countless hours on Table Mountain, rock climbing, the intimate connection to the earth influences my sculptural work. The rugged texture of rock, a recurring theme in my pieces, reflects the resilience and strength drawn from nature. These experiences on the mountain weave into the essence of my sculptures, creating a tangible link between the earth, my art, and the cathartic release I find in sculpting.”
Augustus' creative process begins with the intricate anatomical study of the human form juxtaposed against bold rugged textures, enhancing the viewers understanding of the interplay between precision and rawness. Each work is created in clay before a maximum of nine variable editions are cast in acrylic resin or cold-cast bronze.
His sculptures often feature skeletal or otherworldly elements, embodied with a sense of tension and transition, each piece a meditation on death and beginnings coexisting in a haunting interplay.
Currently, Augustus resides and works in the Western Cape, South Africa.
